Commercial Access
This page provides information and a collection of links for commercial users accessing beamline P11 at PETRA III. On this page the procedure to access beamtime for commecial users is described.
Request for commercial beamtime at P11:
Please contact innovation@desy.de if you need commercial access to P11. We are happy to provide information to you about the general conditions for commercial access to PETRA III, administrative and legal aspects, as well as pricing, quotations and measurement agreements. In case you need a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) prior to sending samples or discussing your requirements, we can provide our standard template or process yours. Please note, that we cannot begin preparing for the experiment until we have concluded on a measurement agreement.
For scientific questions, questions about technical parameters, etc., please refer to the other sections of this wiki or
or contact the beamline scientist in charge of P11. You can find the contact at
Before your beamtime project:
- Register at the DESY Online Office for Research with Photons (DOOR):
All the participants of the experiment (remote access or on-site, also if you only want to access the data for analysis) need to have a valid DOOR account. In case you don’t have a DOOR account yet, please go to https://door.desy.de and register there. - Setting up a measurement agreement:
Before accessing commercial beamtime at PETRA a measurement agreement needs to be setup. Please contact innovation@desy.de to agree on such an agreement. Together with the measurement agreement your beamtime project will be registered in our electronic user management and access system DOOR (the DESY Online Office for Research with Photons) and you will receive a proposal ID that identifies your project. Within this procedure a project leader and a principle investigator (PI) are assigned to your project. - Submission of experiment specification:
The next step after setting up the measurement agreement is to submit the experiment specifications in DOOR. The PI of a project is able to do this in his DOOR environment. Please refer to the section 'Proposals - Beamtime Applications - Experiment Specifications' and in this section to 'Submission of experiment specifications for additional proposal types at our facilities'. Please click on the link and follow the instructions there. - Declaration of substances via DOOR:
After the submission of the experiment specification the beamline scientist in charge of P11 is able to schedule your project in the user schedule of P11. As a final step the declaration of substances needs to be done via DOOR. Please refer to https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/before_your_visit/index_eng.html, section 2. - Registration of participants:
All scientists who want to participate in the measurements or want to have access to the data need to be registered as participants of the project. The PI is able to do this. Please refer to https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/before_your_visit/index_eng.html, section 3. - Safety Training:
Please refer to https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/before_your_visit/index_eng.html, section 4 to find information about this topic. Please note that any participating scientist needs the safety trainings, also if you choose to remotely access P11. You can find more information about this under the link above or in the section 'Collecting Data -> Remote Access' below. - Obtain your beamline access card (DACHS card)
If you plan to come for an on-site access during your project please refer to https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/before_your_visit/index_eng.html, section 5 to find information about how to obtain your personal DACHS card. - Access to the P11 User Lab:
If you would like to access the P11 User Lab please refer to https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/p11_laboratory/index_eng.html to find more information about this topic. - Dewar shipment:
If you want to ship dewars with samples to P11 please refer to the instructions on https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/dewar_shipping/index_eng.html.
Collecting Data:
- On-site data collection:
For on-site data collection, you will need an access card to the beamline hutches (DACHS card). You can find the instructions on where and when to pick up your DACHS card on https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/before_your_visit/index_eng.html, section 5. - Remote data collection:
Please find all information about our remote access at https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/remote_access/index_eng.html. - Mail-in data collection:
No additional steps are necessary in this case. The samples will be shipped to PETRA (see https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/dewar_shipping/index_eng.html for details on the dewar shipping) and the measurements are conducted by the P11 staff.
Accessing your Data:
A display node for access via desktop for data processing and viewing is available at https://max-itt-display.desy.de:3389
For beamtimes before the 22/04/2025 the data were saved at: /asap3/petra3/gpfs/p11/YEAR/data/YourBeamTimeID
For beamtimes after the 23/04/2025 and onwards the path has been changed to: /data/asap3/commercial/p11/YEAR/data/YourBeamTimeID
Downloading your Data:
- Accessing your data via sftp:
The access to your data via sftp is the default method at PETRA III. Any user with a DOOR account who is participant of the project can download the data via sftp. Please refer to https://docs.desy.de/asap3/gamma-portal/accessing-beamtime-data-using-sftp/ and follow the instructions there. - Accessing your data via rclone:
The tool rclone offers a similar functionality than rsync. It can be used in combination with your standard DOOR account. You don't need a two-factor-authentication here. Please find detailed instructions about how you can setup and use rclone at https://docs.desy.de/asap3/gamma-portal/accessing-beamtime-data-using-sftp/ in the paragraph 'rclone (Linux, macOS, Windows)' on that page. The tool rclone offers a very similar functionality as rsync. - Accessing your data via rsync over ssh or sftp:
Unfortunately, we cannot offer rsync over ssh anymore. The reason for this is the new policy at DESY to access the DESY network only if a two-factor-authentication is available. Unfortunately, this is not the case on our download servers.
After your beamtime project:
- Please refer to https://photon-science.desy.de/facilities/petra_iii/beamlines/p11_bio_imaging_and_diffraction/user_information/after_your_beamtime/index_eng.html to conclude your project and find information about shipping your dewars back, user feedback and data access.
- Invoicing:
After we receive your feedback on your experiment, we will send you the invoice for the beamtime used and, eventually, for the hours of scientific support and basis fee for mail-in service. - Case Study / Success Story:
In case in the measurement agreement you allowed us to publish a success story on our website and use the logo of your company, our marketing department will contact you to ask for a short text about your experiment. We will not disclose any sensitive or confidential information. - Full publication:
If you chose to publish your results in the measurement agreement please enter your literature references resulting from this project at PETRA in DOOR (section 'After beamtime/experiment', sub-section 'Register your publications').
